Newcastle upon Tyne (usually shortened to Newcastle) is a city in north-east
England. Situated inside the metropolitan borough of Tyne and Wear (and formerly
the county town of Northumberland [1]), Newcastle is situated on the north bank
of the River Tyne, and was founded in Roman times under the name Pons Aelius.
The city is the 20th most populous in England; the larger Tyneside conurbation,
of which Newcastle forms part, is the 5th most populous conurbation in England.
Newcastle is a member of the English Core Cities Group.

The Metro Radio Arena Newcastle is an 11,000 seat sports and entertainment
venue based in Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England. It opened in
November 1995 with a star studded basketball game, and the first concert
was performed by David Bowie on 7 December.

It has hosted WWE Insurrextion, live on Sky Box Office and many other WWE
events most of the time selling out. Most recently on the 9th of November 2006

It is currently sponsored by the local commercial radio station Metro Radio.
It was formerly sponsored by Telewest, and named the Telewest Arena until
January 2004. SMG Europe own and operate the venue.

The Arena is currently home to the Newcastle Eagles basketball team and the
Newcastle Vipers ice hockey team.
